Contrec 415 Gas and Steam Flow Computer

The Contrec 415 is a gas and steam flow computer that takes a flow signal, usually from a vortex, turbine, orifice plate, or similar meter, and corrects it for temperature and pressure to give a real mass flow and energy reading instead of just an uncompensated volumetric number. We get this ordered for boiler houses, gas distribution, and process plants where the actual density of the gas or steam changes enough with temperature and pressure that a plain volumetric flowmeter would give a misleading reading.

It supports a few different compensation methods depending on what’s being measured: the Ideal Gas Law for a simple correction, the Redlich-Kwong equation for general gases where compressibility matters more, the NX-19 method for natural gas, and the 1967 IFC steam tables for saturated or superheated steam. Which one applies depends entirely on the process fluid, so this is one of the first things we confirm before quoting. The 415R variant takes a direct RTD temperature input, while the 415A variant takes a 4-20mA temperature signal, so the right variant depends on what temperature sensor is already on site or being specified alongside it.

Before we quote this, we would normally ask for the flowmeter type and its pulse output characteristics, the pressure and temperature transmitter ranges, and which compensation method matches the actual gas or steam application. Getting the wrong compensation method programmed in is the most common mistake we see on this kind of instrument. Hope this helps.
