We had an enquiry from a customer working on oil & gas drilling equipment (top drive area) who needed an encoder that could survive a hazardous location and still hold up to the constant shock and vibration on that kind of rig.
Hengstler’s ISD25 is a compact, hubshaft-mount intrinsically safe encoder built for exactly this. It uses an advanced optical sensing design with oversized bearings and improved seals, so it lasts where a standard industrial-duty encoder would wear out quickly. It comes in a 2.5″ flange, hubshaft mount (6mm up to 3/4″), with anodized aluminum, stainless steel, or nickel plated housing, sealed to IP67. It carries CE, RoHS, cULus, ATEX, and IECEx approvals, and is independently validated for 400G shock and 20G vibration. Resolution runs from 1 to 9,000 PPR, supply voltage is 5VDC or 7-26VDC, with open collector, open collector with pull-up, push-pull, or DLD 7272 output. Operating temperature is rated -40°C to +80°C, with storage up to +100°C.
From our experience, before we quote this, we would normally check the hazardous area zone classification and IS barrier being used, the hubshaft bore size and tether arrangement, the required PPR and output type, and the housing material needed for the site conditions. Hope this helps.
