The Contrec 214Di is the ATEX and IECEx certified, intrinsically safe version of the 214D Batch Controller. We get enquiries for this one from customers batching flammable liquids or gases in a hazardous area, where a standard panel meter can’t be installed near the flowmeter without proper certification.
It works with any digital output flowmeter that gives a pulse or frequency signal, so turbine, paddlewheel, and other pulse meters all fit. The controller drives two solid state relay outputs, which is what lets it run a two-stage valve sequence, opening on a coarse flow rate and closing down to a slow trickle near the end of the batch for accuracy, rather than a single on/off valve that overshoots the target. A magnetic key lets you reconfigure the K-factor and settings from outside the enclosure, which matters a lot in a hazardous area since you are not supposed to open the housing while live.
Power comes from a 9-28V DC supply, with battery backup keeping the display and logic running through a power interruption, though the backup does not power the solenoid valves themselves. From our experience, before we quote this one we would check the zone classification of the installation area, the flowmeter’s own hazardous area certificate, and whether the valve wiring and solenoids are separately certified for the zone, since the 214Di certificate only covers the controller itself.
