In industrial systems, two devices are often used to monitor flow: the Flow Meter and the Totalizer. While they’re related, they serve different purposes. Confusing the two can lead to wrong equipment selection, costing time and money.
If you’re in process control, palm oil production, water treatment, or factory automation in Malaysia—this guide is for you.
Quick Definition
| Device | What It Does |
|---|---|
| Flow Meter | Measures real-time flow rate (e.g. Liters per minute) |
| Totalizer | Measures cumulative volume over time (e.g. Total Liters used) |
Both can be part of the same system—or even built into one instrument.
What is a Flow Meter?
A flow meter gives you a live reading of how much fluid (liquid or gas) is moving right now through a pipe.
Example:
A Gems turbine flow meter shows:
Flow Rate = 75 L/min
Common Uses:
Real-time control of chemical dosing
Monitoring water or steam in boilers
Air/gas flow in glove production
Pump performance monitoring
Key Brands We Carry:
Gems, Finetek, Vogtlin, Meister
What is a Totalizer?
A totalizer tracks how much flow has occurred over a period of time. It sums up the total volume.
Example:
Total Flow Today = 12,000 L
Some totalizers also include batch control or alarm functions, especially in Contrec 515 units.
Can You Use a Flow Meter as a Totalizer?
Sometimes—yes, if the flow meter has:
Built-in pulse output
External digital panel meter with totalizer function (like PD6200 or Contrec)
But not all flow meters include totalizing function by default.
What Should You Use in These Scenarios?
| Application | Use This |
|---|---|
| Monitoring water usage daily | Totalizer (e.g. Contrec 515 + pulse meter) |
| Checking pump performance | Flow meter (real-time display) |
| Chemical dosing system | Flow meter + totalizer (for control + batch tracking) |
| Monthly consumption record | Totalizer with reset & logging function |
Common Misconception in Malaysia Industry
A lot of clients say:
“I want a flow meter that can display total.”
Yes, that’s possible—but only if your flow meter outputs pulse signal, and you pair it with a digital totalizer or batch controller.
Our Recommendation for Malaysian Factories
| Need | Recommended Setup |
|---|---|
| Basic real-time display | Gems or Finetek flow meter + Adtek panel meter |
| Totalizer + batch control | Contrec 515 + turbine flow meter |
| High-accuracy + Modbus | Vogtlin digital flow meter with built-in totalizer |
