Relative Humidity vs Dew Point: What’s the Difference?
Relative humidity (RH) expresses how much moisture is in the air relative to what that air could hold at its current temperature — which means the same absolute amount of moisture will show a different RH reading depending on temperature. Dew point, by contrast, is the actual temperature at which moisture in the air will start to condense — a direct, temperature-independent measure of how much moisture is genuinely present.
When Standard Humidity (RH) Sensors Are the Right Tool
- HVAC and building comfort control, where RH is the metric people actually experience.
- General environmental monitoring in warehouses or storage areas at relatively stable temperatures.
- Applications where cost and simplicity matter more than measuring in extreme or variable temperature conditions.
When Dew Point Measurement (Michell Instruments) Is the Better Fit
- Compressed air and gas systems — where moisture content matters regardless of temperature, and standard RH sensors lose accuracy or reliability at the pressures and dryness levels involved.
- Low dew point / trace moisture applications — many industrial processes need to know moisture content far below what typical RH sensors can meaningfully resolve.
- Processes sensitive to condensation — where the real risk is moisture condensing out at some point downstream, which dew point measures directly.

A Simple Way to Decide
Ask: does the moisture measurement need to remain meaningful across changing temperatures and pressures, and does it involve gas or compressed air rather than ambient room air? If yes, dew point measurement is very likely the right tool. If the application is closer to general environmental comfort monitoring at fairly stable conditions, a standard RH sensor is usually sufficient and more cost-effective.
