A pressure transducer that’s drifted out of calibration doesn’t usually announce itself. It keeps producing a number, the number looks plausible, and the process keeps running — right up until the gap between what the instrument reports and what’s actually happening becomes a real problem. Knowing the early warning signs is what separates a routine calibration from an unplanned failure.
Warning Signs Worth Investigating
- Readings that don’t match a reference gauge — even a small, consistent offset compared to a known-good reference is a sign of drift.
- Values that shift after temperature changes — beyond what should be expected for the instrument, this can indicate internal component aging.
- Slow response or “sticky” readings — a transducer that lags behind actual pressure changes, or seems to settle at the wrong value.
- Zero offset drift — the reading at true zero pressure no longer reads zero (or the expected baseline).
- Inconsistent readings between identical instruments — two transducers on a supposedly identical process reading noticeably different values.
- It’s simply been a while — no visible symptoms yet, but the instrument is approaching or past its recommended calibration interval.
Why Waiting for a Visible Symptom Is a Risky Strategy
By the time drift is obvious enough to notice on a control room screen, the instrument may have already been feeding slightly wrong data into a control loop, a safety interlock, or a quality record for weeks or months. Scheduled calibration — rather than symptom-triggered calibration — is what actually catches drift while it’s still small.
On-Site vs Off-Site: Which Fits a Pressure Transducer Calibration?
Small, easily removable pressure transducers are often good candidates for off-site calibration, where they can be checked against reference standards in a controlled lab environment with a full traceable certificate. Larger installations, or transducers in locations where removal and reinstallation carries process risk, are usually better suited to on-site calibration, performed in place with minimal disruption.
