They sit on the same panel, wire to the same kind of sensors, and both show you a number — so it’s an easy mix-up. But a digital indicator and a process controller do fundamentally different jobs. Picking the wrong one means either overpaying for control capability you’ll never use, or installing a display when what you actually needed was something that could act on the process. What a Digital Indicator Does
A digital indicator takes a signal from a sensor — temperature, pressure, level, or flow — and displays it as a readable value. Many models also include high/low alarm relays, so they can trigger a light, horn, or shutdown signal when a value goes out of range. What an indicator does not do is actively drive an output to correct the process. It reports; it doesn’t control.
What a Process Controller Does
A process controller does everything an indicator does, plus one critical extra step: it compares the live process value (PV) against a setpoint (SP) and actively drives an output — a control valve, heating element, VFD, or relay — to close the gap between the two, typically using PID (proportional-integral-derivative) control logic. In other words, a controller doesn’t just tell you the process is drifting; it corrects it.
