We had an enquiry from a customer maintaining heavy rail traction motors, asking for a replacement encoder that could survive constant shock and vibration from the track and drivetrain without needing frequent replacement. Their existing setup kept failing at the shaft coupling.
This looks simple, but traction motors on rail, mining, or heavy off-highway equipment put a lot of shock and vibration through anything mounted on the motor shaft. A rigid coupling transmits all of that straight into the encoder bearings, and motor shaft runout or endplay makes it worse over time.
In actual application, the Hengstler HSD44 (part of the NorthStar family) is built specifically for this kind of heavy-rail traction drive duty. It has an integral isolated flex coupling that compensates for motor shaft runout and endplay, an O-ring housing with pilot seals against the motor for extra protection, and an unbreakable code disc. It’s independently validated to 400G shock and 20G vibration, which is why it’s a common choice for heavy rail, mining transport, heavy duty cranes, and commercial hybrid/electric vehicle applications. The standard configurations run at 1024 PPR, with either an 18″ pigtail wire connection or an 18″ pigtail with a 10-pin MS connector, and an extended pilot version is also available.
From our experience, before we quote this, we would normally check the exact connector/termination type needed (flying leads vs 10-pin MS connector), whether the extended pilot version is required, and the mounting details on the motor. Hope this helps.
